Etymology
A compound of Proto-Indo-European *sem- (“one”), *bʰer- (“to bear, carry”), and *h₂neḱ- (“to reach, bring”), probably through a stage where the latter two roots were concatenated into one (compare Proto-Germanic *bringaną (“to bring”)).[1]
