Etymology

A compound of Proto-Indo-European *sem- (one), *bʰer- (to bear, carry), and *h₂neḱ- (to reach, bring), probably through a stage where the latter two roots were concatenated into one (compare Proto-Germanic *bringaną (to bring)).[1]
