Possibly from earlier *orxdo-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃erg-dʰh₁o-, composed of *h₃erg- (“to perish”) + *dʰeh₁- (“to do”). Also compare Old Armenian ուռն (uṙn, “hammer”), from a different root.
