From Proto-Indo-European *moh₁ros (“great”), o-grade from the root *meh₁- (“to measure”). Cognate with Ancient Greek -μωρος (-mōros, “mighty”), Proto-Germanic *mērijaz (“renowned, famous, great”), Old Church Slavonic мѣръ (měrŭ, “great”).
