Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *bʰerǵʰ- (to enlighten). There is, however, also a Proto-Celtic adjective *berxto- (bright, beautiful), pointing to the other meaning of this PIE root, sometimes reconstructed with a laryngeal *bʰerHǵ- (bright).[1]
