Uncertain; possibly from Proto-Indo-European *gʷew(H)- (“to gain”), whence Latvian gaut (“to catch, gain”), gūvejs (“winner”), Lithuanian gáuti (“to gain, obtain”), or perhaps from *bʰewd- (“to beat”).[1]
