Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰask- (“bundle”)[1] or non-Indo-European source[2]. Cognate with Latin fascis (“bundle, faggot”), and perhaps Ancient Greek φάσκωλος (pháskōlos, “leathern bag, sack”), Albanian bashkë (“fleece”).
