From Proto-Indo-European *h₂énh₁mn̥ (breath, spirit, soul), from *h₂enh₁- (to breathe) + *-mn̥ (abstract noun suffix). Equivalent to *ana- + *-man.
Compare Proto-Italic *anamos and Proto-Hellenic *ánemos, from *h₂énh₁mos.
