Etymology 1
From earlier *gwēl, from *gwɨɣl, borrowed from Vulgar Latin viglia, from Latin vigilia (“watch, vigil”).[1] Parallel borrowing with Old Irish féil (“festival, feast day”),[2] Middle Irish figel, figell (“vigil”).[3]
