This Proto-Balto-Slavic entry contains reconstructed terms and roots. As such, the term(s) in this entry are not directly attested, but are hypothesized to have existed based on comparative evidence.

Proto-Balto-Slavic

Etymology

Uncertain; suggested to be cognate with Ancient Greek κρηπίς (krēpís, man's high boot, half-boot), Proto-Celtic *kariyos (shoemaker), Proto-Germanic *hrifilingaz (shoe),[1][2] however reconstructing an underlying Indo-European form is problematic and is likely a substrate Wanderwort.[3] Alternatively, if Proto-Slavic *kъrpa (piece of cloth) indeed belongs here, perhaps derived from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (to cut) or *(s)kerH- (to divide).
