Generally from Proto-Indo-European *kelH-:
- Buck, Hamp: From undetermined *kelH- (“to rise”), akin to Latin excellō (“excel”).
- Rasmussen: From *kelh₃-, akin to Ancient Greek κολώνη (kolṓnē, “column”), Lithuanian columen (“column”), Proto-Germanic *hulliz (“hill”).
- Kaukienė: From an earlier Narten-typе ablauting stem *kēl- ~ *kil-, derived from one of the above hypotheses.
