Etymology
From earlier *w(i)tspátnjā, from Proto-Indo-European *wiḱ-pót-nih₂ (“clan matriarch”), from *wiḱpótis (compare Lithuanian viešpatni (“lady”)), compound of *weyḱ- (“clan, kindred”) (compare Ancient Greek οἰκία (oikía, “house (clan)”), Avestan 𐬬𐬌𐬚 (viθ, “royal court”)) and *pótnih₂ (compare Ancient Greek πότνια (pótnia)), feminine of *pótis (“master”).
