From Proto-Germanic *bibrīnaz, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰebʰriHnos, equivalent to befer + -en. Cognate with Old High German bibarīn and Latin fibrīnus. Compare biren, fyxen, gǣten, swīnen, wylfen, and ytren.
