Perhaps from Proto-Celtic *ɸlānom, from Proto-Indo-European *pl̥h₂nóm, from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂- (“flat”).[1][2][3][4] Related to Proto-Celtic *ɸlārom (“floor”), *ɸlātrom. Cognate with Latin plānus.
