Etymology

Univerbation of rē +‎ eāpse, older form of ipsā, later perhaps interpreted as ab sē. Eventually replaced/renewed by rē ipsā.

• (Ecclesiastical) IPA^(key): /reˈap.se/, [reˈäpse]
• Note: the phonemically long vowel of /rē/ regularly undergoes shortening before another vowel.
