Etymology

From Middle High German quī̆t (“released, unencumbered, free”); derived from Latin quietare. Cognate with Dutch kwijt, English quit, French quitte.[1]

1. (only used in the predicative) quits, even

   Wenn du mir die Hälfte zurückzahlst, sind wir quitt.

   If you pay me back one half, we're even.

2. (only used in the predicative, regional) rid of something, having lost something

   Ich hab so viel Holz im Schuppen, ich weiß gar nicht, wie ich das quitt werden soll.

   I have so much wood in my shed, I don't even know how to get rid of it.
