Latvian
Etymology
Formed from the preposition par with transference of intonation and consequent vowel lengthening (par̄ > pār > pāːr). The semantic differentiation between par and pār is a relatively new phenomenon, even though it was apparently already complete in 17th- and 18th-century grammars.[1]
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [pāːr]
Preposition
pār (with accusative)
- (spatially) across, over
- pār upi ― across the river
- pāriet pār tiltu ― to go over, to cross the bridge
- pārlēkt pār grāvi ― to leap over a ditch
- (figuratively) over
- valdīt pār kādu ― to have power over someone
