From Proto-Finnic *pähkä, from Proto-Finno-Permic *päškɜ. Cognates include Finnish pähkinä, Estonian pähkel, Livonian pē’gõz, Veps pähkim, Ingrian päähkänä, Erzya пеште (pešte), Moksha пяште (pjašte), Eastern Mari пӱкш (pükš), Udmurt пашпу (pašpu, “hazelnut bush”) and possibly also Komi-Zyrian пашкан (paškan, “rosehip”).
