释义

proverse

English

Etymology

Introduced as a technical term describing aerodynamics. From prō, prō- (before, in front of) + vertere (to turn). See also versus.

Adjective

proverse (comparative proverser, superlative proversest)

  1. In aerospace engineering, describing the tendency of a plane to roll in the same direction as yaw
  2. Suggesting the tendency to preempt by foreseeing first-order and second-order consequences.
    a proverse strategy or tactic

Usage notes

  • A proverse reaction is one that renders unnecessary a future need to react or avert. If using a proverse tactic, the resulting chains of cause and effect are compacted and minimalized, as these are preemptively obliviated. As the implicated object of avoidance and its consequences are expected to never occur, this avoids future reasoning about the object of proversion. Proverse implies that a statement incorporates the notions of time or cause and effect. It implies that a subject is capable of inductive reasoning, especially when combined with first-order logic or monads. Because the object of avoidance is oblivated, the attribution of proverse tactics is obfuscated.
  • The figurative meaning follows from how the impact of wingtip vortices cause proverse and adverse yaw when attempting to steer an aircraft. In early aerospace engineering, before rudders were added, adverse yaw would cause aircraft to begin turning in the opposite direction as the pilots had intended to steer. Applying this to reasoning about causation means that your pilot is steering to avoid something, but in doing so is creating more consequences from reacting to it or attempting to avert it. These consequences give rise to turbulence and instability. These adverse consequences can directly give the object of thought power simply by compelling other entities with the capacity to reason to focus on it or to expand the parameterization of their reasoning to include it.
