Possibly from Gothic anapraggan (anapraggan, “press”). Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *prAng-, *prAgn- (“pole, stalk”), cognate with Old Norse frakka (“javelin, throwing spit”), Old English franca (“javelin, lance”). Occurs almost exclusively in the plural form.
