pitää
Finnish
Etymology
From Proto-Finnic *pitädäk, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *pitä-. Cognate with Estonian pidama, Erzya педямс (pedjams, “to stuck”), Hungarian fűz (“to tie”). For the semantic assossiation between the senses "to like" and "to consider, assess", compare tykätä from Swedish tycka.

Usage notes
- (to have to): Täytyä expresses absolute necessity to do something, whereas pitää does not have such an unconditional sense as täytyä. pitää can be made even less strict by using the conditional forms, resulting in something like the English "should".
- (to like, be fond of): With verbs, a derived noun (such as with -minen, valid for all verbs) in elative case must be used.
