Etymology 1

Origin unknown. Perhaps from French pimpant (smart, sparkish) or German Pimpf (boy, youth, young squirt). The Old English near-synonym was rendered by Old English forspennend (literally solicitor).

From Brythonic numerals, from Proto-Brythonic *pɨmp.
