picciriḍḍu
Sicilian
Alternative forms
- picciriddu (eye dialect)
- picciridu
Etymology
Uncertain. Probably from an unattested Norman or Occitan superstratum/adstratum, because of the palatalization of the -cc- nexus. Eventually derived from Latin *piccus, borrowed from Proto-Celtic *bikkos (“small, little”); possibly influenced (and/or conflated) by dissimilation by Latin paucus (“few, little”). Cognate with Neapolitan piccerillo and Greek πιτσιρίκος (pitsiríkos). Compare Provençal picho and pechin. See also Sicilian picca and picciottu.
