Ultimately from Ancient Greek φαλαγγίτης (phalangítēs).
Noun
phalangite (plural phalangites)
- (obsolete) A soldier belonging to a phalanx.
- (historical) Specifically, a pikeman fighting in a Macedonian phalanx, armed with a two-handed pike and using a smaller shield than the hoplite's aspis.
