Etymology
From a Vulgar Latin root *petīre, from Latin petere, present active infinitive of petō, from Proto-Indo-European *peth₂-. Compare Old Neapolitan pezzire ("to ask/beg for alms"), Italian pezzente (“beggar”), Spanish and Portuguese pedir.
