- A noninvasive procedure for recording movements of the precordium in order to measure the beat in the cardiac apex.

- Lian et al (1941) and Taquini et al (1940) routinely used apexcardiography in differentiating a split second heart sound from the opening snap and third heart sound in mitral valve disease.

- All 14 of the patients who improved during the digoxin period had exhibited a third heart sound, whereas only one of the 11 patients who was not improved had exhibited this sign (Fig. 2) (the existence of an audible third heart sound was verified by phonocardiography or apexcardiography in all but one instance).
