Peschmerga
German
Alternative forms
- Peschmerge
Etymology
From Kurdish pêşmerge / پێشمەرگە. The use of -a for the final vowel is probably influenced by other European languages (including English) where this is done to avoid a fronted pronunciation of the letter -g-. The Kurdish vowel is the same in the last two syllables (phonetically [æ]).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /pɛʃˈmɛrɡa/, /ˌpeːʃ-/
Noun
Peschmerga m (genitive Peschmerga or Peschmergas, plural Peschmerga or Peschmergas or Peschmergen or Peschmerge)
- Peshmerga (Kurdish fighter)
Usage notes
- The form Peschmerge seems to be somewhat more common in the plural than the singular, meaning that there is probably a false belief among some language users that it is a plural form (likely based on the Italian plural formation as in pizza → pizze).
