Etymology

From Middle English pencioun, pensioun, from Anglo-Norman pencione, Old French pencion, and their source, Latin pēnsiō, pēnsiōnem (payment, weight, rent, compensation), from the participle stem of pendere (to weigh). Doublet of pensione.
