  1. (often pluralized) A feeling of shame, guilt, or embarrassment, resulting from behavior which one regrets.
    • 1879, Anthony Trollope, John Caldigate, ch. 50:

    • 1896, Frances Hodgson Burnett, A Lady of Quality, ch. 11:
