Etymology
First attested as ecclesias in Selandia, videlicet in Duuelant Antiquam et Novam in 1233. Compound of an inflected form of oud (“old”) and kerk (“church”). So named to distinguish the settlement from Nieuwerkerk. See also Zealandic Ouwerkaarke.
