    • 1590, Edmund Spenser, “The Faerie Queene”, in The Works of Edmund Spenser, volume 3, London: printed for F. C. and J. Rivington, T. Payne, Cadell and Davies, and R. H. Evans, published 1805, OCLC 2917268, Canto IV, page 345:
      But ſparks, ſeed, drops, and filth, do thus delay;
      The ſparks ſoone quench, the ſpringing ſeed outweed,
      The drops dry up, and filth wipe cleane away
