Otterlo
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as in uttarlo in 838. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a compound of otter (“otter, Lutra lutra”) and lo (“pool”), although it is strange that a location in the forested and arid Veluwe would be named after an aquatic mammal. A reinterpration of the first element as Old Dutch Authari (“a personal name”) is problematic as the initial element lacks a genetive case ending in the oldest attestations.
