From Old French oser, from Vulgar Latin *ausō, *ausāre, from Latin ausus, perfect active participle of audeō, from Proto-Italic *awidēō (“to be greedy, want very much”). Compare Occitan ausar, Catalan gosar, Italian osare, Spanish osar, Portuguese ousar.
