From Latin Ophiūchus, from Ancient Greek Ὀφιοῦχος (Ophioûkhos, serpent-handler), from ὄφις (óphis, snake) + ἔχω (ékhō, to hold).

  1. (astronomy) A zodiacal constellation of the northern summer said to depict a man (Asclepius) holding a serpent; the serpent is the constellation Serpens.

Usage notes

Although it is not a member of the traditional twelve signs of the zodiac, the sun does pass through the constellation as defined by the IAU.
