Etymology
First attested as in hamaritda around 800-850. Likely a compound of op (“upriver”) and Old Dutch hamar (“stone, rock”) with collectivising suffix -itja-. The element op was added later to distinguish the settlement from Nederhemert-Noord and Nederhemert-Zuid. Compare Hemmerde and Hemmerden.
