- (Noord-Holland) First attested as oestenwoude in 1312. Compound of Middle Dutch oost (“east-, eastern”) and wout (“marsh forest, swamp forest”). The settlement is located to the east of Midwoud and Nibbixwoud.
- (Friesland) Attested as Oestwoldt in 1543. Calque of West Frisian Eastwâld, a compound of east (“east-, eastern”) and wâld (“marsh forest, swamp forest”).
