First attested as oldeholtwolt in 1320. Compound of oud (“old”), either holt (“rising deciduous forest”) or dialectal hol (“low-lying”) and wold (“marsh forest, swamp forest”). The element oud was added to distinguish the settlement from Nijeholtwolde.
