Etymology
From Proto-Germanic *uberstīganą. Cognate with Old High German obarstīgan, Old Norse yfirstíga, Gothic 𐌿𐍆𐌰𐍂𐍃𐍄𐌴𐌹𐌲𐌰𐌽 (ufarsteigan). Equivalent to ofer- + stīgan, literally "to climb over or across."
