From ocēlōtl (“jaguar”) +‎ oquichtli (“warrior”).

Usage notes

Some scholars, such as J. Lockhart, instead parse this word as moceloquichtli, with the first element being instead from mocel (“you alone”). The only attestations are in the vocative, leaving the correct lemma form in dispute.
