释义

Nunspeet

English

Proper noun

Nunspeet

  1. A village in Gelderland, Netherlands.
  2. A municipality of Gelderland, Netherlands.

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as nunspiet in 1313. Etymology uncertain. The toponym is explained as *nuewenspete (derived from Middle Dutch nuwe (new) and spete (dug ground)) or alternatively as *nums-speet (derived from Middle Dutch nums (nobody's, no-man's) and spete (dug ground)). The first etymology is taken to mean "freshly dug ground", while the second etymology is explained as "no-man's land that anybody can use". The latter etymology fits slightly better with earlier forms of the name.
