Etymology

From Yiddish נודניק (nudnik) < root of נודיען (nudyen, to bore) + ־ניק (-nik, noun-forming suffix) (English -nik). Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *nuda < Proto-Indo-European *newti- (need) < *new- (death, to be exhausted).
