From Proto-Vietic *ɲuːʔ (“to drink”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɲuuʔ (“to suck up, to drink”); cognate with Koho nyu (“to drink alcohols”), Samtao ɲɯ́ʔ, Teressa nyūḵ, Santali ᱧᱩ (ñu, “to drink”).
