Attributed to various military leaders, including Bernard Montgomery, Dwight Eisenhower and Douglas MacArthur, the quotation has existed in various forms since the Second World War but was fixed in its present form and popularized by the 1987 movie The Princess Bride. As the largest continent, containing several climatic regions, deserts and mountain ranges, central Asia is a very difficult area for military manoeuvres.
