From Proto-Nuristani *murdikā́, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mŕ̥diH (“clay, earth, soil”), from *mŕ̥ts, from Proto-Indo-European *meld-. Cognate with Ashkun míč, Prasuni mire, Waigali muk, English mold (“ground, earth”). Compare Proto-Japonic *mita (“clay, earth”) (whence Old Japanese にた (nita), Miyako みぃた (mta), Okinawan んちゃ (ncha), Yaeyama んた (nta)).
