Méiw
Luxembourgish
Etymology
Probably from early modern German Möwe, Mewe, from Middle Low German mêwe, from Old Saxon mēu, from Proto-West Germanic *maiw, from Proto-Germanic *maiwaz. Alternatively as a dialectal word through Middle Dutch mewe from the same Proto-Germanic source. The bird migrates southwards along the Rhine, Moselle, and Meuse, sometimes reaching Luxembourgish territory. Cognate with Dutch meeuw, English mew, Icelandic mávur.
