From Latin Medardus, which probably has a Germanic origin.The second part hard- stems from Proto-Germanic *harduz (“hard, brave”).The first part is unclear. Theories assume Germanic *mahtiz (“might, power”) as in Mechthild, Germanic *maed (“honour”), Celtic *mat (“good”) and Celtic *med (“centre”).[1]
