From Proto-Ugric *mɨkθa, from Proto-Uralic *mëksa, by rebracketing of the possessive form mája into máj + a instead of the earlier má + ja. Cognates include Mansi ма̄йт (mājt), Finnish maksa and Estonian maks.[1][2]
