Etymology

First attested as amuthon in 918-948. Derived from a compound of Old Dutch ā (“watercourse, river”) and the dative plural form of Old Dutch mutha (“mouth”) or Old Frisian mutha (“mouth”), the latter element (modern Dutch muide) referring to its location at the mouth of the Vecht river. The first element was gradually lost.
