Semi-learned borrowing from Old Norse Mjǫllnir, from Proto-Norse *ᛗᛖᛚᚢᚾᛁᚨᛉ (*melluniaʀ), from Proto-Germanic *meldunjaz. Another theory is a relation to mjǫll (“fresh snow”), whence also mjøll.
