From miðr (“middle”) + garðr (“yard; enclosured land; realm”) or directly from Proto-Germanic *midjagardaz (“Middle Earth”). Cognate with Old English middangeard, Old Saxon Middilgard, Old High German Mittilagart, Gothic 𐌼𐌹𐌳𐌾𐌿𐌽𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌳𐍃 (Midjungards).
