Etymology 1

From Old Spanish mesquino (“poor; beggar, homeless”), also attested in the medieval period as mezquino, from Arabic مِسْكِين‎ (miskīn, “poor”). The sense of “stingy” developed in the early modern period. Compare Portuguese mesquinho.
